Joseph (Joe) Markwell Abell, 87, of Denver, entered eternal life on February 1, 2022.
Joseph was born in La Junta, Colorado to Houston and Martha Abell, who were both originally from Kentucky. Joe grew up in La Junta and was educated in the public schools there.
After high school, Joe attended the Colorado School of Mines, of which he was a proud graduate. While studying at the Colorado School of Mines, Joseph met his future wife Bonnie, who was a student at Colorado Women’s College. Bonnie and Joseph were married in 1956 in Wichita, Kansas, and were married for over sixty years until Bonnie’s passing in 2019. Shortly after their marriage Joe served his country in the United States Army.
After Joe completed his military service, Bonnie and Joseph lived in many states including Texas, Wyoming, and Oklahoma, while Joe pursued a successful career as a petroleum engineer and businessperson in the oil and gas industry. In 1965, Bonnie and Joe returned to the Denver area, where they raised their family and resided for many years.
Joseph was known throughout his life for his very strong work ethic, many accomplishments in his profession, and dedication to family. Family members and friends remember Joe as a person of great integrity, intelligence, and generosity towards others. In recent years Joe was always very interested in his grandchildren, and he will be especially remembered for his tremendous dedication and care for his wife as she struggled with a long illness and dementia.
During his free time, Joe liked to do crossword puzzles, was an avid reader, and always enjoyed the beautiful mountain scenery of Colorado. He also enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos and was always interested in and knowledgeable about current events.
Joseph is survived by his sons, Michael (Preston) and Steven (Anna), and grandchildren, Claire, Matthew, and Benjamin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the charity of one’s choice.
