Joe was employed by United Airlines for 40 years as Supervisor of Cargo and Ramp and retired on May 1, 1996. He performed several functions in that department and was well respected by his employees and peers. He commented often he missed the good people at work when he retired. Joe met his wife, Verlee, at United when he was furloughed from Cleveland, Ohio in 1985. They enjoyed flying on United and coast to coast motorcycle trips. Their retirement motorcycle trip for Joe was 6, 500 miles. Joe was faithful about exercising (walking at least 45 minutes a day). He enjoyed helping neighbors or anyone needing a hand. His hobbies were computers, woodworking, reading and exploring our beautiful country. Preceded in death by his daughter Tammy Oppman, his wife Stella Oppman, and son Derek Lee Phillips; Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Verlee; children, Joseph George (Shelly) Oppman Jr.; Julie Ann(Michael) Hurayt; Jerry Allen (April) Oppman; James Edward Oppman; Brian Craig Phillips; daughter-in-law, Tina (Michael) Cohenour; 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
