Joseph Francis Sweeney

July 10, 1939 — April 9, 2011

Joseph Francis Sweeney, 71, a resident of Denver, Colorado and formerly of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on April 9, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Denver. Survived by his beloved wife and friend, Georgia (nee Gernenz) Sweeney, his siblings Patricia (Patrick) Pemberton of Oak Lawn, Illinois, John (Caryl) Sweeney of Sarasota, Florida, and Teresa (Paul) Klimek of Westchester, Illinois, and sister-in-law Carolyn (nee Gernenz) Elmore of Justice, Illinois. Preceded in death by his father John Edward Sweeney and his mother Josephine M. (nee Schopp) Sweeney, Sister Diane (Eugene) Harling of Chicago, Illinois. Beloved uncle of Cheryl (James) Einsele, Michael (Mary) Harling, Donna (Terrence) Gasior, Thomas (Donna) O'Boyle, Peggy Clifford O'Boyle, Nancy (Bernard) Leifker, Daniel (Allison) O'Boyle, Donna Wenk, Brian Wenk, and many great nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home located at 11150 Dartmouth, Aurora, Colorado as follows: Visitation, Tuesday, April 12, 2011 3 to 8 pm and Wednesday at the church from 9-10 AM. Funeral Mass at Church of the Risen Christ 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 Interment will take place on Thursday, April 14th at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area B, 3698 S. Sheridan Boulevard, Denver at 10:30 am. Mr. Sweeney served two terms as the Adjutant of American Legion Leyden-Chiles-Wickersham Post 1, the most recent from 2010 until his passing. He was also the Chef De Gare of Voiture 97, as well as a life-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4171. Mr. Sweeney served in the U.S. Army from September 1957 - September 1963. He was a successful businessman in the Denver area for 41 years after moving from the Chicago area in 1970. He was dedicated to his family, friends and community, and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Mr. Sweeney's honor to the American Legion Baseball Program, and sent to the American Legion Post 1, 5400 East Yale Avenue, Denver, CO 80222-6905.
