Josephine 'Jo' Squires

Josephine (Jo) Hannigan was born in Chicago on September 15th 1926. Her parents, Jim & Mary (Vehay) Hannigan emigrated from Ireland to Chicago in 1910. Jo's older brother Jim died of tuberculosis when Jo was 15. She is a graduate of Mercy High School in Chicago where she met Emmett Squires at a school dance. When he came home in 1946 Jo married her sailor. Emmett was a WW-II veteran who served in the Navy in the South Pacific. Emmett began his career as an immigration investigator for the DOJ while Jo took charge of their two children, Gerri & Jim. Then there were weddings, then grandchildren (Lisa & Laurie and Erin & Jim) then there were great grandchildren – 17 of them! Jo & Emmett moved from Chicago to Colorado in 1976 when Emmett retired. Emmett passed away in 1990 and for the past 22 years Jo has been the Matriarch of the Squires clan. Jo is preceded in death by her parents Jim & Mary Hannigan, and her husband Emmett Squires. Survived by children Gerri Masson and Jim Squires; 6 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 11:00am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 8035 South Quebect Street in Centennial, Colorado 80112. A private interment will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jo's name to The Village at Johnson Center, 4761 East Costilla Avenue, Centennial, CO 80122.
