Joyce Grimes

July 9, 1922 — December 9, 2018

Born in Fulham, London, England and married in Fulham in 1944 to Walter Earl Grimes. She was a war bride to the United States, arriving in Washington DC in 1946.

Joyce was an extremely active person her entire life. She was ""always on her bike"" when she was a kid-riding all over south London in the 30's. She was a girl guide and enjoyed camping. Joyce began working at age 14 after completing her primary education. Her comment was always: ""I worked all my life.""

She survived the London Blitz during World War II and had to be awoken to go to the bomb shelter because she could sleep through the sirens! A bomb was dropped at the end of her street and her cousins had to relocate due to damage to their house.

She met PFC Walter Earl Grimes (Buddy), U.S. Army Air Corps, when he was stationed in Royston. They were married at All Saints Church in Fulham in 1944. She then took the USS Argentina to the United States with a whole load of other war brides and arrived in Washington DC in 1946. Joyce and Buddy lived in Washington for several years where their only child, Barbara, was born. They lived in Maryland and Virginia during their married life.

Joyce worked for Raleigh Haberdasher clothier in Washington for about 20 years, then entered the Federal Government working for the Geological Survey and ending her career in 1985 in Denver with the Bureau of Land Management.

While back East, the family enjoyed boating, water skiing, and roller skating. With her husband's passing in 1975, Joyce began her single life and never stopped being active. She joined hiking, travel, and ski clubs (traveling up and down the east coast and Europe to ski!). She moved to Denver in 1977, and kept up her active lifestyle adding dancing to her repertoire. She was known to go out 5-6 times a week to dance. She took tap lessons, belly dance lessons, as well as becoming an outstanding ballroom dancer. She was a member of the Lakewood Elks Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Dale) Henry; two grandsons, Matthew and Christopher Henry; and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Henry.

A remembrance will be held at a later date.
