Joyce Kay Higby

April 28, 1945 — November 5, 2013

Joyce Kay Higby passed away at 5:35 PM on Tuesday, November 5th at the age of 68. Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Jim. They were married in Sterling, Colorado on April 20, 1968. She is lovingly remembered by her sons; Eugene and Andrew and her grandson Jayden Dean Higby. Joyce was born in Brush on April 28, 1945. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1963, attended CU Boulder and went on to earn a degree from Regis University in 1984. She was a beloved English teacher at Jefferson High School who inspired her students to do their very best. To say the least she touched many lives and we're all better for having had her in ours. Joyce had an amazing green thumb and prided herself on her gardens, which included a fantastic collection of flowering cacti. Each spring around Mother's Day, we had a ritual of moving the cacti out from the sunroom to the patio – injuries were had, but we never minded much. Joyce was a road warrior, a Louise to her Thelma, Robbie and she had many adventures across the West, the Deep South and in Hawaii. From relaxing at the spa, hanging with wild buffalo – nothing was off limits. A Funeral Service will be held at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 7577 West 80th Avenue, Arvada, CO 80003 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 9th, 2013 with Pastor John E. Anderson, D. Min. officiating. A Reception/Wake will take place immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the American Cancer Society, 2255 South Oneida Street, Denver, CO 80224.
