Joyce Lane

March 22, 1930 — December 26, 2018

Joyce was born in Berthoud, CO on March 22, 1930 to Elmer and Lela Carlson. She grew up in the Berthoud community attending the United Brethren Church and holding a part-time job at one of the grocery stores. She graduated first in her class from Berthoud High School in 1948.

Joyce was accepted into the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Denver. Her tuition for the 36-month course of study for a nursing certificate was $300. During that time, the University of Denver partnered with the nursing school and offered a BSN degree for an additional four quarters of study. Joyce had a 50% scholarship to DU and graduated first in her class in June of 1954. She always referred to this time as a highlight of her life.

While employed by Presbyterian Hospital, she began to take some graduate level courses at night. The federal government issued traineeships to a few colleges around the country and The University of Colorado was one of them. CU had ten of these available and Joyce's management encouraged her to apply; assuring her that her job would be there after graduate school. She received her MSN from CU in June of 1958. Referring to this time she has said, ""I won't say I enjoyed this whole time, but I survived.""

She met her husband, Harold Lane, through friends at the hospital. They were married on June 7, 1959 in Berthoud. They set up home in Southeast Denver. Two years later, they became parents to their first and only child, Dennis. The family was active in the First Christian Church of Englewood.

In 1984, Harold and Joyce became in-laws when their son married Catherine S. Carter. They became grandparents with the birth of Andrea Rochelle Lane in 1991 and again in 1995 with the birth of Kelsey Nichole Lane.

In the late years of their retirement, Harold and Joyce resided at Someren Glen in Centennial, CO. They were married for 50 years before he passed away in January of 2010. She is survived by her son, Dennis (Cathy) Lane; and grandchildren, Andrea (Bryce) Beblavi, and Kelsey Lane.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at One o'clock in the afternoon with a Viewing beginning one hour prior to Funeral. There will be a Reception to follow. All services will be held at Horan & McConaty, 5303 East County Line Road, Centennial. Joyce's final resting place will be Fort Logan National Cemetery with her husband, Harold.
