Joyce Mehrens Mohr of Denver passed from the presence of her loving family into the eternal love and presence of her Lord and Savior on March 13, 2021 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood after a prolonged illness. Born May 1, 1953 in Denver, CO Joyce was the third daughter of Harry and Esther (Koelle) Mehrens.
She graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Denver in 1971, the same year she met her soulmate and future husband Rob Mohr outside Hodels drugstore in southwest Denver. Their first date was at the Evans Drive-In in a 1963 Chevy Impala Supersport Convertible. They married on March 24, 1973 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Denver.
Around this time Joyce earned a certificate as an EMT from Arapahoe Community College, working in both emergency rooms and on ambulances. Her experiences as an EMT led to a lifetime love of medicine, although she chose to become a stay-at-home-mom when first daughter Leslie was born in 1980, followed by daughter Kelley in 1983.
Joyce had many interesting hobbies. She loved quality science fiction, particularly Star Trek, and in later years collected autographs from many Star Trek cast members. She was artistic and creative, enjoyed classic movies, dancing, the Colorado Rockies, reading, and music. She was opinionated and strong-willed, but had a big heart for senior dogs and her friends, sending thoughtful cards and letters constantly to friends who were struggling or celebrating life events. Her witty sense of humor, kindness, and one-of-a-kind presence will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Though Joyce’s husband, daughters, and family, and hobbies were of great importance to her, there was nothing that she valued above her salvation in the Lord, Jesus Christ. After being born-again in 1979, Joyce shared the love and sacrifice of Jesus with many friends and family members. Joyce and Rob served in their church where Joyce taught Sunday School and where she joined Community Bible Study to deepen her knowledge and understanding of scripture. Through many seasons of deep pain and struggle, Joyce continued to grow in her faith and relationship with the Lord. She felt especially called to the study of Biblical prophecy and her wisdom and knowledge on the topic was extensive. She knew that this life would have troubles and pains that did not make sense. She followed the teachings of Jesus to pick up her cross and follow him regardless of those struggles. She built her life and identity on the foundation of her Faith in the Lord. Joyce could not help but make an impact on those around her. However, the impact she most hoped to make was sharing the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. If Joyce were here, she would want you to know that there is a savior who died on a cross for your sins and waits for you to accept his gift of grace. As Jesus chose to die for you, he could see your face, you heart, and your struggles, and loved you.
Joyce will be lovingly missed by husband Robert E. Mohr; children Leslie (Matt) Krupa; daughter Kelley (Brandon) Crockett; siblings Barbara (Mike) Padbury, Janet (Steve) Mueller, Mary Tenantry, and Keith (Terry) Mehrens; brother-in-law Scott (Heather) Mohr; several nieces and nephews; and Charlie the Cocker Spaniel.
A celebration of life will take place in Joyce’s backyard on June 26, 2021. “But God showed his great love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Donations in Joyce’s memory can be made to the Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue, PO Box 482, Parker, CO 80134, 303-617-1939.
