Julia Evelyn Stiff was born in Bedford, Virginia on June 24, 1928 to William Duval Chambers and Ruby Toler Chambers, the second of their five children. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents as well as her siblings Ruby Davis, Gloria Holcomb, William Chambers, II and most importantly, her loving husband of 53 years, Landon Jackie Stiff. Evelyn transitioned to her heavenly life April 18, 2020 at the age of 91 in Centennial, Colorado.
Evelyn and Landon were married in Bedford, Virginia on July 3, 1947. Shortly thereafter and following Landon's honorable discharge from the US Navy, they moved to Brooklyn, NY to begin their life together. They resided in Brooklyn for many years but took a detour to Roanoke, Virginia to be with family for almost five years. However, they returned to Brooklyn and continued their lives with their three daughters, Judy, Jacqueline and Robin. Many years later they followed their daughters to Southern California and lastly to Colorado in 1998.
Along the way Evelyn shared her love for life with her kindness, patience and caring for family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. She loved cooking and would gladly prepare a feast for all, she could sew anything, loved her hymns and playing the piano. Later in life she enjoyed gardening and was so proud of her beautiful flower garden in Colorado. During these times as well she had a great group of friends in her Pokeno Club. However, her daughters were her pride and joy and she doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her career started as a beautician and she owned her own salon in Roanoke and later in Brooklyn. She subsequently joined the Federal Reserve Bank of NY and retired with 30 years of service at the Federal Reserve in Los Angeles. Evelyn volunteered her time in the Neonatal ICU at Aurora Medical Center Aurora, Colorado where she held and comforted newborn babies in the loving way that came so natural to her.
Evelyn was baptized as a child at the Washington Street Baptist Church Bedford. She was a faithful member of Mt Sinai Baptist Church in Brooklyn and later the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Roanoke, where she initiated their first children's usher group and was instrumental in expanding the children's choir. She continued her faithful service to God and her community at New Lots Reformed Church of Brooklyn, Culver-Palms United Methodist Church in California and attended The Potters House in Denver.
Those left to cherish her memories are her three daughters Judy Stiff Clark, Dr. Jacqueline Stiff (Michael Cross) and Robin Stiff; her grandchildren, Christina Clark, Byron Clark (Hulda), Lindsey Cross (Austin Gregersen), Logan Cross, great-grandchildren Whitney Banks, Flynt Clark and Edryk Landon Clark. Evelyn was called Grandma by so many more. She is also survived by her sister Diane Chambers Fitts (Douglas) AZ, her sisters-in-law June Stiff Jackson (Robert) VA, and Betty Chambers of AZ. She was a loving Aunt Evelyn to a host of nieces and nephews, Godmother to Noland Dilette and many more cousins and extended family.
