June Eastman Pausback
July 15, 1938 - January 21, 2019
June Eastman Pausback, age 80, passed away in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, 2019, due to Alzheimerâs disease. She was born July 15, 1938, in Redwood City, California to Samuel Palmer Eastman Jr. and Helen Murphy Eastman.
She grew up in the hills of Woodside, California where she rode horses and attended school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and Crystal Springs High School.
In 1960, while studying for a Bachelor of Science in zoology at the University of California, Davis, she met and married Bernard Pausback, the love of her life and adventure partner.
They had three daughters before moving to Colorado in 1967. Bernard took a science teaching position at the Aspen Middle School. Shortly after they had a son.
An enthusiastic outdoors-woman, June rode horses, hiked, rafted, skied and mountain biked. She is known by many for selling lift tickets at the bottom of the Campground lift in Snowmass Village, Colorado. She worked for the Aspen Ski Company for over 20 years. To her delight, she started each day of work by skiing to her ticket shack. With a zest for life, she decorated outhouses, yahooed down ski slopes, wore tacky jean jackets, and enjoyed an irreverent sense of humor.
June reveled in nature, using it as a channel to connect people and build community. She enthusiastically volunteered to lead outdoor education trips for the Aspen School District, including seventh-grade river trips, eighth-grade outdoor education (hiking and climbing) and the high school Ex Ed rafting experience. During summers, she and Bernie partnered with the late Fr. Tom Bradtke in leading church and community river trips.
She is preceded in death by brother Samuel Eastman III. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Bernard Pausback; four biological children, Marti Pausback, Annie Pausback, Lizzie Newell, and Joseph Pausback; as well as family and friends spanning the world including her God-daughter of choice, Gwen Kluwe Nirschl, foster son Michael Kluwe, and numerous exchange students, guests, and sojourners. She is survived by four biological grandchildren-Alice Michaelson, Benjamin Michaelson, Samuel Pausback, and Henry Pausback-and three grandchildren of choice: Leah Nirschl Morgan, Heidi Nirschl Borrego, and Madeline Nirschl Liu as well as one great-granddaughter of choice, Eleanor Morgan.
