Kathryn 'Kathy' Mary Akerlund

Kathryn M. ‘Kathy' Akerlund Ed.D., age 82, resident of Littleton, CO., passed away on March 4, 2019. She was born January 25, 1937 in Tony, Wisconsin to Beatrice and Cornelius VanDoorn. Kathy was a devoted wife of 57 years to her beloved husband, Edward T. ‘Ted' Akerlund. Ted preceded her in death August 28, 2015.

Kathy attained her Doctorate in Education from George Washington University. She worked for the Colorado Department of Human Services as Director of Prevention in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division. She also served with the National Prevention Network for the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. She worked as a docent for the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Washington DC, and the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. She was also a high school counselor.

Kathy is survived by her loving family: son, Jim Akerlund; daughters, Carol (John) Rapp and Sue (John) Culton; grandchildren, Jace Akerlund, Jeremy Rapp, Natalie Rapp, Eryn Culton and Hans Culton; and siblings, Bill VanDoorn, Jim VanDoorn, Diane Minard, and Cork VanDoorn. She was preceded in death by siblings, Rich VanDoorn and Connie Riel.

A celebration of Kathy's life will be held Thursday March 28, 2019 at 10 am at the Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 East County Line Road, Centennial, CO 80122.

Kathy will be laid to rest with her husband at 1 pm on Thursday, March 28th, at Fort Logan National Cemetery (Area “A”), 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd., Denver.
