Kathryn Aune

July 7, 1933 — March 31, 2020

W. Kathryn (Kathy) Aune, 86, died in Lakewood, Colorado, on Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Cause of death was related to dementia.

Born at home in Dade County, Missouri, on July 7, 1933, to Howard and Grace (Underwood) Cummings, she was the fourth of six daughters. The family lived in Missouri until moving to the Greeley, Colorado area first, briefly, in 1935 and more permanently in 1942. Kathy was a member of the Class of 1950 at Greeley High School but married Gale Aune in 1949. She lived in Mojave, California, in the early 1950’s, while her husband served in the U.S. Marine Corps, but returned to Colorado in 1956 and lived first in Greeley then in Denver from 1963 until her death. She was divorced in 1967 and though she was engaged several times, she never remarried. She bowled regularly on a mixed league at Crown Lanes until her mastectomy in 1990.

Kathy was a landlocked lover of lighthouses and often declared that the tours she took with Grace Wanderers after her retirement marked the very best time of her life. She was proud of having visited all 48 of the contiguous states and had a particular fondness for New England. In spite of her travels, her favorite place in the world was Estes Park, Colorado, and she loved nothing more than a summertime drive over Trail Ridge Road with her nephew Mike Cline and his wife, Pam.

Kathy began selling Avon products upon moving to Denver in 1963 and continued that activity for 53 years, until 2016; she retired from Shamrock Foods in 1998.

Survivors include daughter Karen (Lawrence) Ornelas; sister Sue Horton; grandchildren Katie (Kevin) Fredrick, Tyler (Sarah) Bhorntus, Adam Vilders, Amarindra Bhorntus; great-grandchildren Ami Bhorntus and Brooklyn Fredrick.; and more than a dozen nieces and nephews. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters: Debbie Bhorntus and Suzanne Aune; and four sisters: Lea Mauldin, Millie Cline, Gene Thoutt and Joan Cummings.

Services for Kathy will be held at a later date.
