Kathy Leigh Romm Hickman

August 6, 1945 — March 19, 2015

Our wonderful wife and mother, Kathy Leigh Romm Hickman, passed away peacefully on the evening of March 19, 2015, after a five-and-a-half year battle with cancer. Her faith and optimism throughout her life, but particularly in these last few years, continue to inspire and uplift us all. Kathy was born on August 6, 1945, in Logan, UT, to her parents W. J. ""Bill"" and Ida Mae Romm. She spent her childhood and youth in Burbank, WA, where she was the oldest of six children. Her brothers and sisters David, Leslie, Sandy, Shelley, and Richard remain close to her heart. Her father Bill precedes her in death, and we can only imagine the happy reunion the two of them are enjoying right now. Kathy graduated from Pasco High School in 1963, after which she earned a BS in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University in 1968. That same year Kathy married Larry Hickman in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joining her for time and all eternity to the man who was and is Kathy's best friend and faithful companion. Their marriage made for a happy and humor-filled home for their four children Trent, Tara, Micah, and Merideth. Her children were blessed to have a mom who could always be home to greet them each day as they returned home from school, anxious to share the successes and concerns of their days. In all phases of her life, Kathy served as a dedicated teacher, both professionally as an elementary school teacher for several years in Utah and as a teacher of her children. She also taught in many different capacities as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from classes taught to young children to youth instruction in early morning seminary classes to Gospel Doctrine classes taught to countless adults in different congregations in Kansas, Texas, and Colorado. For Kathy, the Gospel of Jesus Christ deserved to be taught well, both in the classroom and through the example of a life well lived. In later years, Kathy also worked at Celestial Seasonings and at LDS Family Services, places where she formed friendships which endure to this day. Kathy always lived a life of energy, fully engaged in whatever task was at hand. As a youth and into her adult years, she loved sports—basketball, softball, and tennis were among her favorites—and she was even known to skateboard from her dorm to classes at BYU. She loved to read and proved a formidable competitor in card and board games, which she usually won. Her ability to put people at ease, to joke with others, and to show genuine care even to individuals who she had just met meant that Kathy made friends wherever she went, whether at the grocery checkout lane or in the hospital rooms at the MD Anderson Cancer Center where her doctors and nurses afforded her special kindness. Kathy is survived by her mother, Ida Mae Romm; all of her brothers and sisters; her husband, Larry; her children Trent (Wendy), Tara (Christian) Romney; Micah (Thomas) Worsley; and Merideth (Jonathan) Dunning, and fourteen grandchildren. She also leaves behind many good friends from all walks of life, all of whom she will miss until she is reunited with them again. Kathy's family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, and on Thursday, March 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Westminster Stake Center), 13370 Lowell Blvd. in Broomfield, CO. Funeral services will be held at the Westminster Stake Center at 11 a.m. on March 26, and burial will be in the Broomfield Commons Cemetery.
