Kermit Melroy “Mel” Claytor, age 89, born on January 30, 1933, died on January 9, 2023.  He graduated from Tucson High School. He graduated from University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science Business Administration with an emphasis on Statistics and completed the Army ROTC Program in 1957.  He served in the United States Army Transportation Corp and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.  He met his wife, Katherine at the officer’s club at Fort Eustis, Virginia and they celebrated a military wedding on June 27, 1959.

Following his military service, Mel worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 45 years at which time the company was acquired by the Denver Rio Grande Western Railroad.  He served another 5 years with the D&RGW resulting in a 50-year railroad career. The majority of his career was spent as a Railroad Executive until he retired in June of 1991.

Mel enjoyed dog training, hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, Littleton Men’s Retirement Club, and traveling the world with his wife, Katherine.  As a devout Catholic, he was a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion and a Lector. He and Katherine were facilitators and presenters for Marriage Encounter for many years.

Mel was passionate about Men’s ministries and devoted a significant amount of his time before and during retirement to supporting those ministries.  Ministries he loved include: Catholic Men’s Retreats, Habitat for Humanity, Prison Ministries to both youth and adult men, Marked Men for Christ, Mankind Project, The Gathering of Men, and the Knights of Columbus.  He is survived by his wife, Katherine, daughter, Dedra, sons, Greg and Kermit, and seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
