Kevin Simmons

It is with a broken heart that we announce the passing of our Dad and brother, Kevin Lee Simmons, 60, of Aurora, Colorado.  Kevin passed away on May 30, 2022.  Kevin was born in Dallas, Texas on March 11, 1962.  He grew up and attended school in Grand Prairie, Texas and was a 1980 graduate of Grand Prairie High School.

Kevin grew up as the youngest son of   B. J. and Nelda Barber Simmons.  As the little brother he was always a good target for us older brothers.  That is until he grew to over six foot, four inches tall and became known as “Baby Huey”.

Growing up, Kevin’s greatest love was playing his saxophone.  He started in the sixth grade and played through high school, playing in both the stage band and the marching band. His senior year, he was the Drum Major for the marching band.  When he put that uniform and tall hat on, he was a remarkable sight as he strutted down the Gopher Bowl football stadium.

After high school, Kevin worked for Southwestern Bell for 27 years in the Information Operator Services department.  He moved up to supervisor of a number of employees.  Some of them have told me how much they enjoyed their time working with him.  After leaving the phone company, Kevin began working for himself as a remodeler.  He was very good at kitchens and bathrooms.  When he completed the tile work in a room, it almost seemed like a work of art.  He honestly believed in the thought Mom always tried to instill in us.  Hundreds of times, we heard her say, “if a job is worth doing, don’t do it half-way.”  Kevin never did.

In 1984, Kevin got married and was blessed with two wonderful children.  Leanna “Lee“ and Kurt were, and, still are his pride and joy.  He was the kind of Dad that brought fun and laughter to as many situations as possible. He tried to always be there when they needed Dad.  Today, he also has two beautiful granddaughters that he adored. When they called him Grandpapa, he would just light up the room.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, and he was also met at Heaven’s gate by one nephew, Ryon Gukich Simmons. He is survived by His children, Lee and her fiancé Dee, Lakewood, CO; Kurt and wife Michelle, Cresson, TX; and granddaughters, Annabelle, and Scarlet. Kevin is also survived by his four brothers Johnny Simmons and wife Camilla of Hallsville, TX; Jerry Simmons of Aurora, CO; Vance Simmons and wife Kim of DeSoto, TX; and Robert Simmons and wife Lou of Garden Ridge, TX.

Kevin, your family and many, many wonderful friends loved you more than you could ever know, you will be greatly missed.
