He was the oldest of five children (Laddie, Donald, Darlene, Duane, and Lawrence). Laddie graduated from Yankton High School in 1950. His first job after high school was with Larson Brothers Construction learning sheet metal work. In 1952, Laddie enlisted with the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1955. After returning to South Dakota, Laddie attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. On June 8, 1958, Laddie married Minerva Geraldine Stevens.
After graduating from SDSU in 1960 with a degree in Civil Engineering, Laddie accepted a job with the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation on the Denver Federal Center campus in Colorado. For the next 34 years Laddie enjoyed applying his engineering degree helping the Bureau of Reclamation design and build hydro-electric dams in the western part of the US.
Laddie and Minerva relocated to Colorado first in Golden and eventually settled in Lakewood. Laddie and Minerva quickly found a home at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church and have been members since 1960. Soon after moving to Colorado, they started their family by welcoming a daughter, Kimberly, and son, Douglas.
While living in Yankton, Laddie enjoyed playing baseball and continued playing the game with the softball leagues at the Denver Federal Center. His favorite baseball team was the Los Angeles Dodgers beginning when they were in Brooklyn, and he was an avid fan of the Denver Broncos. During his spare time, Laddie enjoyed golfing, bowling, planting gardens and puttering in the yard, feeding the birds, and coaching sports teams for Doug. Laddie and Minerva enjoyed dancing, especially polka. Many Sunday evenings, they could be found spinning on the dance floor.
Laddie is survived by his wife, Minerva; daughter Kimberly (David) Garrels; son Douglas (Crystal); four grandchildren Katherina, Jacob, Elodie, and Ryley; Elodie's mother Christl Tate; sister Darlene Pokorney; sister-in-law, Juanita Pokorney and many nieces and nephews.
