Lael F. Porter, 86, of Lakewood, passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Swedish Medical Center. Born on July 30, 1932 in New York, she was the daughter of Ronald and Frances (Fernandez) Carpenter. Lael, a trained vocalist who sang regularly on a NYC radio station, married Ralph Porter in 1954 and together they shared 64 years of marriage.
After 28 years as a military wife, singing in church choirs across many states, Lael graduated from the University of Colorado-Denver Center (MA). Lael shared her life generously, teaching at Red Rocks College, and UCD. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women for many years, traveling around Colorado to offer diversity workshops. She was part of an NGO group visiting China where she explored women's communication networks. Lael was active with Girls Count and patron of the UCD library. She was also a published poet, member of the Columbine Poets of Colorado. For many years Lael was a member of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, volunteering in the Cathedral Book Store. She is a graduate of the Education For Ministry program. An ardent lover of the natural world and its creatures, Lael belonged to a number of organizations that exercise care and advocacy on their behalf.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, Lael is survived by her daughters; Canadian branch: The Rev'd Paula Porter Leggett, and husband, The Ven. Dr. Richard G. Leggett, and grandchildren, David, Anna and Owen; and Colorado branch: Sandy Porter, grandchildren, Jennifer and Harry, and her great-grandchildren, Jamie and Brody.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 1PM at Horan & McConaty, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Lakewood, CO 80227.
Memorial donations in Lael's name may be made to the charities of your choice. Her family hope your choice will reflect things important to her.
