Larry Lackey, born April 9th, 1936; passed on April 12th, 2022 at the age of 86. Born at home in Breckenridge Colorado, Larry spent his formative years living in small mountain towns: Breckenridge, Fairplay, Heeney, Palasade, and Uravan. As the only brother to four sisters and being only 5’5”, life was quite a challenge right from the start. He was as familiar with hunting, shooting, and fishing as he was hopscotch, jump rope, and jacks. He learned to fly light aircraft from his father while still in High School and loved being in any kind of airplane. After high school, he worked as a mine laborer and on road construction crews to put himself through college, ultimately earning his Civil Engineering degree from Colorado State University. During this time, he also met and then married his wife of over 60 years, Sharon. Following college, he entered the US Navy and attended OCS and primary flight training in Pensacola Florida. He spent the rest of his active-duty years assigned to the P2V Neptune patrol bombers in Washington and Alaska. Released from the Navy, he served as the County Engineer for Humboldt County in California, and then the project engineer for the Waikoloa Village and Beach Resort in Hawaii. Colorado was still calling to both Larry and Sharon and they moved to Denver in 1973, remaining there for the rest of their lives. Holding Professional Engineering licenses in 5 states, Larry was actively involved in many developments and projects from New Mexico to Wyoming, and also served as City Engineer for several towns and municipalities. In his retirement he spent time riding bicycles throughout the Front Range and all over the Denver Metro area. Preceded in death by his wife Sharon, his son Brian, parents Charles and Thelma Lackey, and his sister Marilyn; he is survived by his sons Monty and his wife Sandy of Lawrenceville, GA; John and his wife Donna of Denver, CO; one daughter-in-law Shanna of Columbia, SC; his sisters Jacqueline, Karenita, and Dorothy; 9 grandchildren: Nathanial, Caitlin, Justin, Joshua, Andrew, Heide, Alexander, Victoria, and Jacob; and 11 great-grandchildren. Interment is at Ft. Logan National Cemetery; military honors will be observed.
