Larry Patrick McCarty was born to Frances and V. M. McCarty in Lake Park, Iowa, March 14, 1939. He was the 11th of 13 children. He died after a long decline from Alzheimer’s disease on December 19, 2023 in Castle Rock, CO, at the age of 84.
He is survived by Mary Kay McCarty, his wife of 61 years, and their children: Debbie (Dusty) Davies, Kathy (Troy) Lewis, Dan (Amy) McCarty, Cindy (Joe) Grubenhoff, Jennifer (Jason) Knievel; 10 grandchildren: Kristi (Ben) Bush, Emily (Kelton) Brown, Melissa Davies, Abby (Alex) Shartzer, Lauren Lewis, Caitlyn McCarty, Bradyn McCarty, Jess Grubenhoff, Chex Grubenhoff, Eli Knievel, and great-granddaughter Eloise Brown. He is survived by his sisters Rosemary Salber, Yvonne Kopp, Marilyn Newman and sister in law Marla McCarty, and many nieces, nephews, and their descendants. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, V.M. and Frances McCarty, and his siblings Clifford (Marilyn) McCarty, Paul McCarty, Patrick McCarty, Pat (Raymond) Starman, twins Daniel and Donald McCarty, Charlotte (Delmar) Meyer, Ruth (Richard) Adams, and Janice (James) Benz.
Larry grew up on a dairy farm in Hartley, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1957. He moved to Houston, Texas to attend the University of St. Thomas where he met Mary Kay O’Brien. They were married in Houston, Texas in 1962. They moved to San Diego, California where he was stationed in the Navy and then deployed to Japan. When Larry finished his service in the Navy they returned to Houston, Texas. They moved with their growing family to Littleton, Colorado in 1969. In 1975 they moved to what would become Centennial into the first house built in the Foxridge neighborhood, and stayed there for more than 45 years.
Larry built his own HVAC business, Better Service Inc., and was also very involved in his Catholic parish, St. Thomas More, from its first meetings with Fr. Fred McCallin. He helped Fr. McCallin acquire property for the parish from a local farmer. His passion for the land defined him and he maintained a cattle ranch in Agate, Colorado, where he spent as much time as he could throughout his adult life. He loved horses, his garden, early mornings, black coffee, and his large family.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, 11:00 AM, 8035 S Quebec St, Englewood, CO 80112. A Rosary will be held at Horan & McConaty Highlands Ranch funeral home on Monday, January 8, 2024, 5:30 PM, 5303 E County Line Rd, Centennial, CO 80122.
