Laurene Nance Bowles

June 22, 1908 — June 16, 2011

Laurene Nance Bowles, 102 years of age, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away on June 16, 2011. She was born to the late John and Myrtle Swindle Nance on June 22, 1908, in Seligman, Missouri. On March 10, 1931, Laurene received her Registered Nurse License from the Missouri State Board of Nurse Examiners. After a move to California and a brief marriage to Sam Paul, during which Nancy Marilyn was born in 1934, Laurene married Hoyle Bowles in 1937 in Riverside, California. After several moves for Hoyle's work, the family settled in Lubbock, Texas. Laurene worked as a private duty nurse, in doctors' offices, and in hospitals during her career. She was an active member of First Christian Church for many years. She loved to read, care for her home and family, and her cooking skills were extraordinary. She cared for neighbors when they were ill, established lasting friendships with many people who stayed in touch with her for years, and maintained a dedicated interest in and concern for her numerous extended family members. Following her daughter Nancy's death, Laurene moved to Springfield, Missouri, for a time, then to Aurora, Colorado, where she lived until her death. Laurene is survived by her twin sister, Laura Schubert of Missouri, and two granddaughters: Cynthia Tinsley, Colorado, and her husband Jack Mumey; and Kim Tinsley, West Virginia, and her husband Ron Haberman. Laurene is also survived by: a niece, Linda Williams, Missouri, and her family; a nephew John Schubert, Arizona, and his family; a nephew-in-law, Steve Bowles, Oregon, and his family; and a nephew-in-law, Mike Bowles, Texas, and his family. Laurene was predeceased by her husband, Hoyle, in 1982, and her daughter, Nancy, in 1999. Her brother, Earl Nance, also predeceased her. A Memorial Service for Laurene will be held at 2:15pm on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Shalom Park, 14800 East Belleview Avenue, Aurora, Colorado 80015. She will be interred in Lubbock, Texas, with Hoyle. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting support for the International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care (www.hospicecare.com). The family expresses deep gratitude to Shalom Cares nursing home staff and hospice staff for their extraordinary care of Laurene during her residence there. Laurene's resilience, determination, and humor will continue to inspire those who have known her.
