Lawrence A. Biro (Larry) was born in 1944 in Wyandotte, Michigan and passed away peacefully in Denver, CO due to ALS on January 29, 2021. He was diagnosed in 2013 and chose not to see ALS as a death sentence, but as a challenge that he must overcome. He grew up in Wyandotte and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1963, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1967, a Master of Education degree from Wayne State University in 1968, and a Doctor of Education in 1981 from Loyola University Chicago. His whole career was in education and administration in the medical field.
After three years in the army, he was a public school teacher for a few years in Lincoln Park and Warren, Michigan. He taught GED classes at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Milan, Michigan to inmates. He moved his family to Chicago where he worked for the Sisters of the Sacred Heart at Columbus-Cuneo-Cabrini in Chicago for almost 20 years. He was the hospital administrator at Cabrini Hospital in Chicago. He and his wife left the Chicago area for Washington D.C. where he worked for six years at the US Department of State. He then worked at the US Veteran Affairs Department for 18 years before his disease forced him to retire. The VA relocated him to medical networks in Pittsburgh, Denver, Atlanta, and Dallas, where he was admired and respected by those who worked with him. He was always a good listener and put veterans first. His career showed him so many different aspects of life and of the human spirit.
He is survived by his wife Holly of 53 years. She was his best friend and soul mate. He is also survived by his sons Timothy (wife Amy) in Denver and Charles (wife Mala Adiga) and granddaughter Asha Adiga-Biro, in Washington DC. He is also survived by his brother Mike in Michigan and his sister Patricia in Texas. He lived life to the fullest and even though he has passed he is not gone.
Donations can be made in his name for ALS research to brainsupportnetwork.org .
