Lawrence Burrows "LB" Haws, Jr.

September 17, 1938 — September 14, 2020

LB was born in West Helena, Arkansas on September 17, 1938 to godly parents, Rachel and Lawrence Burrows, Sr, who raised him in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. At a young age he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was active in his church and sports during high school. The family moved to Kokomo, Indiana where he attended Purdue University earning a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Graduating in 1960, he joined the United States Air Force.  His first assignment was launching Atlas Missiles, at Patrick Air Force Base, in Florida.   His love of the space program started here.  Color deficiency disqualified him from joining the astronaut program, so in 1963 he transferred to Convair/Astronautics, San Diego, California to be a plant representative in the AFPRO office.  There he met his wife, Jackie and they were married on September 4, 1965.  He went on to earn his master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Arizona State University. The next assignment in the Special Project’s Office moved them to the Los Angeles area, where Dave was born on July 11, 1972.  As a family they attended First Baptist Church in Torrance, California, LB was a deacon and with Jackie they were head of the Junior High Sunday School Department.  Another transfer to the Pentagon was coming, but God changed those plans moving them to Dayton, Ohio in 1978 stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.  The family attended Dayton Baptist Temple and again LB served as a deacon. After a long and exciting career LB retired, as a Lieutenant Colonel in September of 1987. Seeking new employment led him to the Boeing Company in Colorado.  After attending South Sheridan Baptist for many years, he and several families helped Pastor Ward Smith start a new church in Parker, Colorado, called Grace Baptist Church.

Always wanting to know the Bible better, he attended Bible Study Fellowship in California then resumed studying in Colorado.  He joined Community Bible Study with Jackie as Co-ed Core leaders.  He had a biblical world view of creation, was a member of Rocky Mountain Fellowship, a big supporter of Answers in Genesis, and other creation ministries.   He was on the Advisory Council of the Dean Burgeon Society where he presented two research papers on the Bible. LB was always thinking about what to research next.

He loved Southern Gospel music attending the Nation Quartet Convention from 2003 until 2017 when health issues preventing him from traveling.  Hiking in the foothills, taking pictures, watching old time westerns and good mysteries were some of his interests he enjoyed through the years.  His love of the space program always continued even though he could not attend every missile launch he watched all of them on YouTube.

Jesus took him home to heaven on September 14, 2020.  He was a godly man who loved his Lord and Savior, loved his family, loved his Bible, and loved his friends. He is survived by his wife Jackie, son David (spouse Janine), and granddaughters Katherine, and Kristine.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Grace Baptist Church.

Please share memories of LB and condolences with his family by signing the tribute wall.
