Lois M. Schmidt

January 14, 1929 — February 2, 2010

Lois Marjorie Schmidt was born January 14, 1929 in Chicago and passed away peacefully February 2, 2010 in Colorado Springs at the Sunrise at University Park Assistant Living facility, where she called home for 3 years. Lois was one of a kind. She grew up in Chicago, graduated from Foreman High School and married Emil E. Schmidt in Chicago in 1948 after he came home from the Pacific at the end of World War II. Lois and Emil lived in Chicago for six years, during which time their first two daughters were born, Vicki and Terry. They moved to Denver in 1954, where Emil took a job as an Insurance Salesman with Van Schaack and Company. Shortly after arriving in Denver, their third daughter, Kristi, was born. Lois and Emil were married for 56 years. Laughter was a foundation in their relationship and together they enjoyed life to the fullest. They traveled a lot and took a number of cruises. They saw St. Petersburg, Munich, Miami, Hobart, Alaska, and Florida together. They loved visiting Las Vegas, where Lois' sister Doris lived with her family. While Emil played craps, Lois and Doris went shopping, their favorite past time. Emil passed away in 2005; Lois missed him every day. Lois and Emil were charter members of Christ the King Lutheran Church and Lois rarely missed a Sunday when she lived in Denver. She was a Sunday School teacher in the early years of the church, was a member of the choir and held the position of secretary of the women's church bowling league. Lois loved to sing, dance, bowl, sew, and made the most of every situation by finding the humor in it. She enjoyed making people laugh and kept everyone on their toes with her quick wit. Lois is survived by her daughters, Vicki Schmidt of Breckenridge, Colorado, Terry Schmidt-Honn and husband Ron Honn of Colorado Springs, Kristi Bigelow and husband Guy Bigelow of Breckenridge, Colorado; her grandchildren, Allison Raitz and husband Fredy Diaz of Denver, Matthew Bigelow of Washington, D.C., Cathi Martin and husband Peter Martin of Fairbanks, Alaska, Patrick Bigelow of Fort Collins, Colorado and Mandy Honn of Washington, D.C.; her great-grandchildren, Peter Scott Martin, Tyler Zachry Martin, Gianna Ahren Martin and Gabriel Vasillias Diaz-Raitz; and her family of the staff from Sunrise at University Park. Lois was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she will forever be in our hearts. May she rest in peace. Visitation Monday, 4pm to 6pm, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard. Funeral Service Tuesday, 10:00am Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2300 South Patton Court, Denver 80219. Interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Odessey Hospice, 5526 N. Academy Blvd., Colo. Springs, CO 80918 or The Alzheimers Assoc. Rocky Mountain Chapter, 455 Sherman Street, Suite 500, Denver, CO 80203.
