Louis William Supancic

June 2, 1922 — April 11, 2020

Louis William Supancic, an outstanding member of America's Greatest Generation and long-time resident of Denver, Colorado, passed away in Denver on April 11, 2020 at the age of 97.

Born in La Veta, Colorado, on June 2, 1922, Louis was the oldest of two sons born to Louis and Margaret Supancic. His family moved to Cameo, Colorado, in 1934, where his parents owned and worked in their River View Coal Mine.

Louis attended Cameo Elementary School and Palisades High School where he met the love of his life, Mary Lou Bancroft. They graduated together in 1939 and later married on Christmas Day, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Palisades, while Louis was on a short but eventful leave from the service. Louis graduated from Mesa Junior College before attending the University of Colorado.

During his third year of college in 1943, he enlisted in the Armed Forces and went to basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was later trained as an aircraft navigator in San Antonio, Texas, and served as navigator on a B-24 Bomber. He was transferred from Texas to Wendover Field, Massachusetts for a short time then transferred to Mountain Home AFB, Montana, for eventual transfer to the Pacific Theater. In late July, he was transferred to Salinas, CA, AFB, where he joined other air crews to fly crucial missions in the Pacific Theater for the reminder of World War II.

After the war, Louis returned to the University of Colorado to complete his degree in Electrical Engineering.

After graduating he worked at Public Service of Colorado in Grand Junction before being transferred to Denver. He was again transferred to Wyoming Light & Power in Cheyenne, his home for five years. He then returned to Public Service of Colorado in Denver where he retired after a long and successful career as a district manager responsible for the entire city power grid of greater Denver.

Louis and Mary Lou welcomed two sons, Louis Jr., born 1951, and Mark, born 1957. Both of his sons and loving wife preceded him in death.

Louis became an active member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church in Denver. He loved his long-time companion Snow, his dog, and daily visits with his dear friend, neighbor and helpful and caring friend, Carl Preyer.

Louis is survived by his younger brother, James Supancic and sister-in-law Barbara, of Anaheim, California, his daughter-in-law Jo Supancic of Lander, WY. and step granddaughter, Tamala; nieces Patricia Rafferty and Linda Flathers of Orange County, California and nephew Dr. J. Steven Supancic of Visalia, California.
