On Sunday, February 7, 2021, Lucia (Lhot) De Guzman Derlein, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away peacefully after a nine-year fight against Multiple System Atrophy at the age of 56. In the days preceding her passing, she was visited by her best friends and called by those who could not be with her in person. In her last moments, she was comfortable in her bed at home, where she was cared for by Agape Hospice and surrounded by her family.
Lucia was born December 13, 1964 in the Philippines, to Emilia Dumlao De Guzman and Jose De Guzman. She grew up in the Philippines, and attended Holy Angel University in Angeles City, Philippines, to study civil engineering. In June 1989, she married the love of her life, Daniel John Derlein.
Lucia was a dedicated mother, first and foremost. She treasured her children and was deeply committed to their success. She had a way of making everyone feel like family and was quick to make friends everywhere she went as an Air Force wife. She loved to laugh, and make others laugh, and was always the life of the party.
Lucia is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, MSgt Daniel, USAF, Retired (55); their three daughters, Traci (30, husband Josh), Danielle (25, partner Mitchell), and Katelyn (21, partner Zach); her mother, Emilia Dumlao De Guzman; siblings Jel De Guzman (Aida), Emily Dimal, Albert De Guzman (Carmina), Joseph De Guzman (Lorraine), and Rhoda Layaoen (Jhun). She was preceeded in death by her father, Jose De Guzman, and brother by marriage Boy Dimal. Lucia was a proud aunt to many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, and a proud grandmother to three grand-dogs, and two grand-cats.
Bearing in mind all of the COVID regulations and travel restrictions, a private memorial will be held at the family’s home in Arvada, Colorado with a 24-hour vigil on February 19, 2021, the date of Lucia’s cremation.
Due to Lucia’s fight against Multiple System Atrophy, in lieu of flowers, the family has opened a Memorial page through the MSA Coalition in her name. All donations go to the MSA Coalition to fund research for effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure. The donation page will be open indefinitely in Lucia’s memory; her fight against MSA did not end with her.
