Lucille Rita Gremillion Patterson

Lucille Rita Gremillion Patterson Lieutenant Colonel, USAF, RET. January 20, 1938 November 12, 2007 Lucy was born, raised, and graduated high school in New Orleans, Louisiana. She worked in such diverse fields as dance instructor in 1954 - 1955 and as a Southern Bell Telephone Draftsman in 1955 - 1956. She attended Louisiana State University and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Dietetics. She interned at Vanderbilt University Hospital from 1959 - 1960. In 1960 she joined the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant, providing nutritional guidance in USAF hospital kitchens. Her assignments included Therapeutic Dietician at Maxwell AFB 61-62, Command Dietician, Tactical Air Command 62-64, Tachikawa AFB, Japan; Chief Dietician 64-68, Strategic Air Command HQ, Omaha, Nebraska. In 1968 she was honored as one of the Outstanding Young Women in America. She received her Masters Degree in Home Economics, with an emphasis in kitchen design and architecture from Perdue University. In 1970 she transferred to Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1975, she gave birth to her only child, Ross Alexander Patterson. She then transferred to Clark AFB, Philippines where in 1977 she was appointed the Military Consultant to the USAF Surgeon General. Her last tour of duty was at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi. After 24 years of service, Lucy retired from the US Air Force in 1984, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lucy then began her next career. Moving from Mississippi to Colorado she became the CEO of Wildwood Enterprises in Denver, Colorado, providing home daycare providers with nutritional guidance. In 1999 Lucy was diagnosed with breast cancer, a battle which she would fight for 8 years. She died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family.
