de la Mater, Lyall Davies, Jr. Lt. Col. Lyall Davies de la Mater Jr. (USAF Ret.) of Aurora, CO passed away on May 25, 2004. He was born October 7, 1919 in Saranac Lake, New York to Natalie Ruth Walton and Lyall Davies de la Mater, Sr. He is survived by his beloved wife Esmée of 35 years; Lyall is also survived by his two daughters, Susan (Robert) Faber, Montgomery Village, MD; Tracy (Donald) Goldberg, Chevy Chase, MD; his son, David Lyall (Michelle), Yampa, CO; 7 grandchildren, Bruce, Lisa, Hanna, Ben, Lyall, Dylan, Chase; 4 great-grandchildren, Drew, Abby, Nick & Paige. In 1929, at the age of 9, Lyall became the North American Amateur Outdoor Speed Skating Champion in Lake Placid, New York. He continued ice skating by playing Ice Hockey during his teen years, also playing for West Point and then the Air Force while in Germany in the late 1940's. Lyall was a 1937 graduate of Saranac Lake High School, Saranac Lake, New York. He then graduated from Northwood School, Lake Placid, New York in 1938 and attended St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York. Lyall graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, June 6, 1944. He served in the USAF as a fighter pilot and bomber pilot, 2 years during the Korean War, 1950-52 with the 307th Bomb Wing in Kadina, Japan. He observed the Inchon landing while flying north on a bombing run. He then served for 4 years in the Pentagon, SHAPE HQ in Paris, France for several years. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1962. Lyall had a 20+ year career with United Airlines at the Flight Training Center in Denver. He was Manager Flight Operations Marketing in Denver. He retired in 1988. He sold the flight training facilities of United Airlines to many airlines and individuals all over the world. He kept in touch with many of his clients until the day he died. A Celebration of Lyall's Life was held Friday, June 25th, 12 Noon, at Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum, 7711 East Academy Blvd., Denver. A Committal Service will be held at the Cadet Cemetery on FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2004, 1:30 p.m., USMA West Point. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wings Over The Rockies, 7711 E.
