Mabel ""May"" Weingarten

Mabel Weingarten (May), 89, passed away on the morning of May 19, 2017. She died in her own bed, with her loving husband and their five children by her side. May was born in New York City on August 30, 1927 to Miguel and Ana Gimenez (nee Muñoz-Soto), both from Puerto Rico. She grew up in Puerto Rico and attended Catholic School with her only sibling, her younger brother Miguel Gimenez Muñoz (Junior). In 1947, she graduated from Interamerican University in San German, Puerto Rico, with a B.A. in English. She and her best friend Maggie Grant (aka Titi Maggie) then spent some time traveling to a number of countries, meeting people, and trying out different jobs. During this time, May worked as a translator at the First National City Bank of New York City, and as a reservationist for Eastern Airlines, and even had a stint employed as the secretary/interpreter to the Bolivian delegate to the United Nations in New York. A lover of languages and curious about everyone, May thrived on working with, and being around, people. In 1957, May met the love of her life, Richard Weingarten, at a New Year's Eve party in New York (a party which he almost didn't attend, as he was in college and always studying. Thank goodness one of his roommates talked him into going!) After Richard (Dick) graduated from City University of New York in 1957, he and May got married on September 28 of that same year. They soon got a dog, Pepi, of which there are still hundreds of black and white photos! (They said they were practicing for when they had kids.) In 1958, their first child, Gail, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They moved to Georgia, where Sandra (Sandy) came along in 1959 and Richard Junior (Rick) in 1961, both in the town of Marietta. In January 1962, they moved again, this time to Marlborough, Massachusetts, where Dick earned a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston in 1966. It was in Massachusetts that Lisa was born in 1963, followed by Anita (Bodgey) in 1966. In May 1971, the family headed to Bradford Woods, Pennsylvania, where Dick continued his work in the aerospace industry. The family of seven moved into a 150-year old farmhouse set on 2½ acres, where they enjoyed a huge yard including a garden, fruit trees and blackberry and raspberry bushes. To earn extra income during that time, May started and managed a successful home business where she baked, decorated and sold cakes and cake-decorating supplies. It was during that time that Dick and May bought a tent trailer, which the family used to enjoy numerous camping trips throughout the East coast states and Canada. In November, 1975, Dick's company relocated to Colorado and asked him to come along, so the family moved to Westminster, a town between Denver and Boulder, which has been the family base ever since. May is survived by: her brother Miguel Gimenez Muñoz, (Bessie); her loving husband of almost 60 years, Richard; her four daughters Gail Conner (Jacquie) of Denver, Colorado; Sandy Muñoz-Weingarten (Nola) of Gilbert, Arizona; Lisa Caver of Westminster, Colorado; and Anita Weingarten (Marty) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her son Richard Junior (Rick) Weingarten of Arvada, Colorado; her grandsons Nino Conner, Mario Conner, Andre Conner (Jodi), Benjamin Barron, and Miles Caver; her granddaughters Zoe Weingarten and Alice Caver; her great-grandchildren Alanah Conner and Colton Conner, and numerous relatives throughout Puerto Rico and elsewhere. May was preceded in death by her father, Miguel Gimenez Graña in 1983 and her mother, Ana Muñoz Soto in 1984. May will be remembered for her habitually happy, kind, and nurturing personality; her love of reading, doing crossword puzzles in pen (even the hard ones); music, singing, and dancing; spending time with her family and extended family and feeding all of them tons of great food (especially Puerto Rican cuisine); traveling and learning about new places and their cultures and food; and making instant friends with everyone who crossed her path. She had a wonderful long life and will be missed by everyone who knew her. No services will be held.
