Maj. Donald Lee Hicks USMC, Ret.

August 23, 1934 — December 27, 2018

Maj. Donald Lee Hicks (USMC, Ret.), 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 27, 2018. Born August 23, 1934, in Brackenridge, PA, the youngest child of Elmer Shields Hicks and Margaret Olive Beulah Bracken, he was quickly nicknamed “Bing” by his siblings. They frequently complained that he cried all the time, to which their mother would respond that he wasn’t crying, he was crooning like Bing Crosby. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Frank, Joseph, Mary Lou (Chookie), and Charles.

Don graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1957, whereupon he received his commission as an officer in the Marine Corps. One of his first duty stations was at the Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay on Oahu, Hawaii. There he met Kaye Canfield (on a double blind date!) They were married on December 29,1961, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They crisscrossed the country several times with their growing family as he continued his service in the Corps, which included two tours in Vietnam. Upon retiring from the military, Don and Kaye moved their family to Littleton, Colorado in 1977.

Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kaye; by his children, Maggie, Don (Carol), Ken (Heidi), Jen (Rebecca), and Braden; by his grandchildren, Landon, Jordan (Martha), Lauren (Avery), Conner (Natalie), Kelton, Brennan, Kael, and Alexandra; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

He will be remembered for his wit and intelligence, and for his service to his country.

A viewing will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 11:00-11:45 AM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 999 E Tufts Ave, Cherry Hills Village, CO 80113.
