Margaret Gartner

January 15, 1913 — January 2, 2012

Margaret Ivancoe Gartner was born on January 15, 1913 in Val Ratovec, Hungary. Her parents were Mary Schneider and Michael Ivancoe. She had 2 brothers, John and Jules, and a sister, Helen, all of whom are deceased. In 1921 the family came to the United States through Ellis Island, New York. They settled in Millhurst, New Jersey where her father ran a grist mill. The mill was on a lake and she often commented how she and her siblings spent many of their summer days swimming and fishing and winter days ice skating. After completing high school in 1932 she lived and worked in New York City. At the age of 27 she was very proud to become a citizen of the United States. On July 10, 1943 she married Lawrence Eugene Gartner. After Larry returned from serving in World War II in Europe, they had 2 children, Peggy and John, who passed away in 2004. The family settled in central New Jersey. Marge was very active in the Catholic Church where she taught catechism classes for many years and was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. In 1966 Marge's husband, Larry, died suddenly at age 51, leaving her with a 15 year old son and an 18 year old daughter to raise and educate. Marge worked as an assistant to the dean of foreign languages at Douglas College, Rutgers University. She lived for a number of years with her son John and his wife in Trenton New Jersey where some of her favorite hobbies were gardening, knitting and singing in the church choir. She moved to Colorado in 1989 to be able to spend more time with her 3 grandsons, Rob, Chris, and John. Marge really enjoyed the many places she visited and camped with Bob and Peggy and the grandsons. She toured the southwest, including Grand, Bryce, and Zion Canyons, California, South Dakota, Yellowstone and she even house boated on Lake Powell. She spent many wonderful days in the beautiful Rocky Mountains and especially enjoyed hiking, boating, and fishing. Working with young children was one of the things Marge enjoyed most so after retiring she volunteered in classrooms in local Aurora elementary schools up until the time she was in her mid-80s. She was very proud to be a great- grandma to Lilly, Zachary and Lucas and thoroughly enjoyed all the time she spent with them. They particularly brought much happiness to her in recent years as she lived in assisted living. Marge touched many people. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her life truly impacted so many and she will be greatly missed. Marge is survived by her daughter Peggy and son in law Bob Apmann; three grandsons, Rob Apmann and his wife MaryAnn, Christopher Apmann, and John Apmann and his wife Anna; three great-grandchildren, Lilly, Zachary and Lucas Apmann; daughter in law, Gloria Morgan; sister in law, Dorothy Ivancoe; she is proceeded in death by her brothers, John Ivancoe and Jules Ivancoe and her sister Helen Francis; she is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. As in Isaiah 43, God has called her by name and she is now safely in His hands. Please share your memories of Marge and condolences with her family by clicking on the ""Sign Guestbook"" link below.
