It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Balafas, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, who passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on April 29, 2023. Maria will be remembered for her love for animals, flowers, and gardening, which brought her immense joy throughout her life. Additionally, Maria was a fine tailor of clothing, known for her meticulous attention of detail and her ability to create beautiful garments from scratch.
Maria was born on July 20, 1938, in a small village known as Mesopotamia, Lamia, in Greece. She had a deep appreciation for nature and became an avid gardener, known for her beautiful garden, flowers, and delicious fruits and vegetables.
In 1965, Maria met her husband Sam Balafas. Together, they raised two children, Jimmie and Dina. Tragically, Jimmie passed away at the age of 27 on September 3, 1994, leaving a profound impact on Maria and her family.
Throughout her life, Maria found comfort in her love for animals and nature. She also spent countless hours in her garden, sharing the abundance of her harvest with many.
Maria's legacy will live on through her beloved husband Sam Balafas (87), her daughter Dina Karakus (52), her grandchildren Jimmie Karakus (20) and Elif Karakus (17), and the many friends and family members who were touched by her kind and compassionate spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
