MARILYN HUBER'S LEGACY By Pete Huber (and Bobbi Riggs and Cheri Phelps) I would like to say a few words about our Mom and her legacy. She was a city girl, born as a middle child to Sam and Lottie Lassegard on July 16, 1928 in the small town of Alexandria, South Dakota. This city girl married a country boy and the two of them raised their 3 children on a farm 10-1/2 miles north of Alex. Now there are lots of stories you all know about Mom. She was a fun-loving, game-playing friendly wife, mom and grandma. I want to tell you a few things you may not know about her. Mom was a good cook who taught her kids the importance of measuring EXACTLY whether it was making the hottest coffee around, cakes from scratch or the best fried pheasant in the entire United States. She put her homemaking talents to use when she served as a 4-H leader for the Jolly Workers 4-H Club for many years. She loved to plant flowers and vegetables in her huge gardens. And she canned those vegetables, along with lots of fruits and jellies. She was especially good at canning dill pickles and often had to hide them from Dad so he wouldn't snitch before they were ""ready."" She was a beautiful seamstress and she taught her kids to sew on a treadle sewing machine before getting an electric one. She even sewed a special gold dress for her Mother to wear to her parents' anniversary celebration. She was a singer and was in church choir and school chorus—and her singing Ave Maria is a favorite memory for some. She loved to perform and help others perform whether it was tap dancing with her mother, directing talent shows, accompanying family members as they sang or lip synching to the Judd's, and she loved to sing along when I played the guitar. Schooling was important to her and she spent COUNTLESS hours going over school papers and quizzing us kids for Spelling Bees and catechism questions. She and Dad moved from the farm to the big city of Mitchell in 1970 where she eventually was able to fulfill her love of kids and dolls by leading tours through their Doll Museum. Mom loved to go out on the town and she and Dad spent many hours at wedding dances in Alex and the surrounding area. It provided her the opportunity to get all dolled up in her high heeled shoes and pretty dresses. She loved to dress up and even liked wearing wide brimmed hats. She was a lady who knew how to act like a lady. After moving to Aurora in 1983, Mom began her favorite career as daycare provider—where all the kids called her Grandma and Dad was Grandpa, and she formed long-lasting friendships with the families. She loved to spend time with her family and we spent many nights playing games and cards, as well as weekends camping either at Cherry Creek Reservoir, somewhere in the Colorado mountains, or at her favorite fishing hole at Deerfield, South Dakota. She hosted our family women's Bible Study for several years and she always prayed for her entire family before going to bed at night. She taught a lot of people how to bargain as she loved to ""strike a deal"" going from one garage sale to another for the first several years we lived here. Everything she did revolved around her family—family was the most important thing in her life. She was happiest when there was a bunch of us around, talking and laughing with her. And that is her legacy—a family who learned to laugh and love with a real lady. Marilyn Huber is the wife of Robert J. Huber; mother of Charlotte ""Cheri"" A. (Bill) Phelps, Roberta ""Bobbi"" J.
