Marjorie Hagist

Our beloved Marj, a sparkling light, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully on May 21, 2022. She was born in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado on October 19, 1927. Her early years were spent on a small farm in eastern Colorado and Nebraska. She was part of the great migration to California during the dust bowl.

After graduating from St. Agnes Catholic High School in Los Angeles, California, she joined The Superior Oil Company and was later promoted to the role of Executive Assistant to the Founder and Chairman William M. Keck, Sr. It was at Superior Oil that she met her future husband, Warren Hagist, a University of Wyoming Geology graduate from Casper, Wyoming. With their family, Warren and Marj enjoyed living in Alaska, England, Texas, and Colorado while Warren explored for oil in many places around the world. Warren and Marj retired to Morrison and Dillon, Colorado where they enjoyed skiing, golf, traveling, and many other outdoor activities. Marj became a selfless and devoted caretaker for Warren after he fell ill.

Marj was a lifelong learner. She pursued flight training in her twenties in California. While living overseas, she loved the adventure of travel, taking her family to such places as Soviet Moscow and East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie in the early seventies. Marj loved the game of Bridge. She was also an avid golfer, winning several golf tournaments with the ability to hit every shot right down the middle of the fairway, and continued to golf into her nineties. She encouraged informed risk taking, the pursuit of dreams and would often say “Just do it. You never know what tomorrow will bring.” Marj was an active investor well into her nineties and loved to follow the market. She was a driving force in many clubs and organizations. Marj is a true inspiration for her children and grandchildren, and will be remembered for her smile, enthusiasm, curiosity, commitment to her beliefs, and love. She is an example of a life well-lived.

Marj is survived by her daughter Jill Hagist Johnson, her son Peter Hagist, their spouses Mike Johnson, and Evie Hagist. She has four wonderful grandsons: Kyle Johnson, Todd Hagist, Steven Hagist, and Christopher Hagist, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and loyal dog, Corky. There will be a private mass and celebration of her life at a later date.
