Marjorie (Margie) Lou Thomsen, passed away February 26, 2024. Born in Denver January 12, 1932, to Helen & Thomas Reeves. Sister to Karen (Mike) Webb and Joan (Earl) Anderson. Mother to Sheryl Patterson (Mark Murphy). Grandmother to Adam Martinez and great grandmother to Veronica (Ikeyyy) Martinez and Jacob (Kai) Martinez. Preceded in death by parents, husband, David Thomsen, and grand daughter, Heather Martinez. Aunt, cousin, niece and friend to many.
Margie lived in the Denver area most of her life. She grew up in the Barnum neighborhood and attended West High School. During high school, she loved to go with her Aunt Marie to Elitch Gardens Trocadero Ballroom to dance with the servicemen. At West High, she met and later married her high school sweetheart, Daniel Patterson. Dan passed away when Sheryl was 11 and Margie later met and married Dave Thomsen. They both retired early to travel for 10 years throughout North America in their RV with their little poodle, Princess. They met many friends and travel companions along the way. Eventually tiring of the vagabond life, they settled in Littleton in a little condo where they lived together until Dave’s death in 2008.
Margie continued to live in the condo until August of 2023 when she moved to a nursing home. At first she hated it but came to appreciate the care, companionship and 3 full meals a day! She told her caregivers at Hallmark Nursing Center and Brighton Hospice not to call her Marjorie or Margie, but Margie Lou! They enjoyed getting to know her and thought of her as a sweet little old lady, once referring to her as a fuzzy pink sweater that you just love to hug. They all treated her with dignity and kindness in the last stages of her life.
Margie loved planting flowers and caring for them over the spring/summer months. Mother’s Day was always the start of the planting for the year. As she aged, Alzheimer’s slowly started robbing her of some of her abilities, but she continued to care for her plants. Last summer, her daughter gave her some plastic flowering plants, which she carefully cut apart into individual blossoms and planted each one in containers on her front porch. No matter how much she watered, they did not grow, but they also did not die!
Throughout her life, she had many pets, most recently a black and white cat that she named Baby Doll. She could not have pets at the nursing home, so her daughter bought her a mechanical black and white cat that kept her company in the last days of her life.
Margie lived a long, full life and had many adventures over her years. When her father passed at 92, she told her daughter that she planned to live to 92 like him and she did! She turned 92 in January 2024! She was a spunky young woman who became an even spunkier old lady! She loved butterflies, Italian and Mexican food, and dark chocolate, especially Reese’s Dark Chocolate Thins. She had some favorite slippers that had “Chocolate Makes Me Happy” on them and she proudly wore them most of the time!
Whenever you see a beautiful butterfly or eat dark chocolate, think of Margie Lou!
Charitable donations may be sent to Alzheimer’s Association in her memory.
