Marlin Allen Kelly

Colonel Marlin Allen Kelly January 29, 1916-February 1, 2011 Born in Johnstown, PA, the son of Frank and Margaret Kelly, Marlin moved to Windber, PA and attended grade and high school, before entering the US Army. He then received an ROTC scholarship to the University of Washington in Seattle where he studied sciences in a pre-med curriculum. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Alaska Defense Command in the Aleutian Islands for the duration of World War II. During that time, he married his college sweetheart, Kathleen Mary Donnelly. At the end of the War, he received a scholarship to Northwestern College of Medicine in Illinois, but chose to remain in the Pacific Northwest, as an Army reserve officer, work for the Veterans Administration, and start a family. Marlin worked for the Veterans Administration in Portland, Oregon, Vancouver and Seattle, Washington, and as Chief of the Administrative Division in Denver, Colorado, where he retired in 1975 with a Presidential Commendation for meritorious service. In Denver, he received an MBA from Metropolitan State University and worked as a Registered Pharmacist, high school football and lacrosse referee. He retired from the United States Army Reserve in 1975 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Kathleen Mary Kelly, four children, six grandchildren and one grandchild. Services will be held at Holy Name Roman Catholic Church, 3290 W. Milan Avenue. Rosary today, February 4, 2011 at 7pm; Funeral Mass on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at 11am followed by a reception in the parish center; and burial at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 S. Sheridan Blvd. on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at 1pm. Meet at Staging Area ""A"" at 12:45pm. Donations in his honor may be sent to the VFW, the American Legion or the Disabled American Veterans.
