Martha Haley Orem, 97 years of age, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Good Friday, April 6, 2012 at her home in Greenwood Village. She is survived by her sister Lucy; daughter Carol; son-in-law Brent; her three grandchildren Keith (Laura), Mark and Haley and many dear friends, including her beloved cat, Herbie. Martha was born in Strasburg, Virgina on Easter April 12, 1914 to James and Ernestine Wrenn Haley. She was one of 7 brothers and sisters. She broke the mold of many women of her time by graduating from high school then graduating with highest honors from Emory and Henry University in 1932. During World War II, Martha worked at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C., during which time she was given a scholarship to George Washington Law School, where she studied until the war ended. While in Washington, she met Charles R. Orem, and they were married when he returned from duty in 1945. The two moved to New York where they had one child, daughter Carol, in 1949. Over the next 30 years they took residence in Chicago and Minneapolis due to Charles' work as President of Armour and Co., and President of IDS. In 1981, Martha and Charles retired to Greenwood Village to be closer to their grandchildren and became active members of the community. Charles passed away in 1996. Martha never remarried but remained a cherished grandmother, mother, sister and friend to many, including her wonderful Home Instead caregivers. Martha was the consummate Southern lady, Daughter of the American Revolution, and an avid scholar. She embodied impeccable styles, flawless manners and a rapier wit. She ended every day with a fine gin and a cigarette. Please share memories and leave condolences for Martha's family by signing the guestbook.
