Martin C. O'Dowd

Martin C. O'Dowd, 78 years young, of Lakewood, Colorado, died peacefully at home after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Monday, December 28, 2015. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing which was a comfort for all. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eileen of Lakewood, Colorado. Together, they had six children; Donna O'Dowd-Robb (Bruce) of North Pole, AK, Wendy DeYoung of Fort Collins, CO, Michelle Hoza (Brian) of Hayden, CO, Dan O'Dowd (Ginger) of San Antonio, TX, Sandie Othmani (Farhat) Southaven MS, and Michael O'Dowd (Lisa) of Henderson, NV. He had 19 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and a second expected in August. He was preceded in death by his parents James William and Sarah Grace O'Dowd, two brothers, John and James, and a dear sister, Helen Stapleton. Marty grew up in Bronx, New York and met Eileen Conroy when they were young. It was love at first sight. The two dated through high school and married on December 8, 1957 which was also his birthday. Best birthday gift ever! Marty and Eileen made their home in Denver, Colorado shortly after their wedding. He served in the Air Force for 8 years, and a police officer for the Denver Police Department for over 26 years. Marty was also a Real Estate Broker for many years. Following his retirement, Marty stayed busy pursuing a Law Degree from the University of Denver. After passing the Bar Exam he opened up a law practice in Denver Colorado. He was an active member of St. Jude's Catholic Church for most of his adult life. He also volunteered services for the Make a Wish Foundation, was a member of the Lakewood Optimist Club, and loved to travel. Above all, Marty was a family man. He adored his wife Eileen, and supported and encouraged his children to strive for happiness and success. To know him was to love him. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Denver Hospice Center. A visitation will take place at Horan & McConaty, 3101 South Wadsworth Blvd. in Lakewood, on Monday, January 4, 2015, beginning at 2:00 pm., with a rosary at 6:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at St. Jude's Catholic Church, 9405 West Florida Ave in Lakewood, followed by a luncheon at the church. Interment will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, at 1:00 pm. Please share your condolences with the family by signing the guestbook below.
