Mary Alice Candler

Born January 4th, 1944 in Charlotte, Tennessee to Alfred Ray and Edith Dillingham. Passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 24th, 2011 with her husband at her side. Mary Alice is survived by her beloved husband of 31 years Henry Candler, their son Leland Candler and her sister Nancy Joyce of Denver. Valedictorian of her Charlotte High School class, Mary Alice obtained her B.S. Degree in Home Economics in 1965 at the University of Tennessee and a Masters of Science in 1966. She moved to Denver in 1967 with three of her college friends and spent the next 18 years in Public Health Nutrition at the Denver Health & Hospitals. In the 1970's, she traveled to Peru to assist in child nutrition programs; and in the late 1970's she attended the University of Washington to further her degrees. Also in the 1970's, she attended Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School in Paris for six months. Mary Alice also spent several years at Wildwood Resources, a firm specializing in nutritional needs of child home care centers. Mary Alice was an active skier, runner and Pilates aficionado. She enjoyed the many summers of boating with Henry and Leland. From the time Leland was two years old, they would head to Seattle, equip the boat and go to sea for a month, traveling half way to Alaska, catching salmon along the way. In later years, they took up hockey, traveling with Leland's hockey team to Winnipeg, Ontario; White Bear Lake, Minnesota; Saratoga Springs, New York; and all over Colorado for state tournaments. Mary Alice always had a heart for the less fortunate, donating to many charities - particularly the American Cancer Society, 2255 South Oneida Street, Denver, Colorado 80224, or at www.cancer.org.
