Mary Eileen (Kolfenbach) Spaulding, born March 26, 1923, died peacefully in her sleep on June 24, 2022 at the age of 99.
Mary, known as Midge to family and friends, was the second youngest of her siblings born to Aloysius (Louis) and Caroline Kolfenbach of Dubuque, Iowa. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Household Equipment from Iowa State University in 1946. That year, Midge Kolfenbach was featured in a Look Magazine picture story of Home Management. In April, 1947 she married the love of her life, Dr. Donald Lee Spaulding, DVM. Midge and Don raised 3 children, Gary, Glen, and Susan in Coin, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.
Mary worked in Human Resources at the Department of Labor for the State of Nebraska until retiring to Port Richey, Florida in 1987. She played tennis into her 80's and even competed in the Senior Women's National Doubles Championship at 77 years old. She loved the water and boating. In her 60's she earned her Pilots License to take her friends and family on day trips in her Bayliner motoboat to Anclotte Key in the Gulf for shelling, swimming, and picnicking. It was a short trip from her residence at Sand Pebble Pointe Condominiums on the Pithlachascotee River.
In 2016 she moved into Independent Living at Cherry Creek Retirement Village in Aurora, CO to be closer to her family. Midge spent her last two months in Assisted Living before passing on.
Mary is survived by her children Gary and Susan, her grandchildren Damoni and Demitri, and her five great-grandchildren, David, Nicholas, Ty, Cameron, and Ryan. Mary had many nieces and nephews in the Spaulding and Kolfenback families. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Donald and son, Glen.
