Mary Elizabeth Hendrickson

Mary Elizabeth (Ollis) Hendrickson passed away peacefully at Swedish Medical Center Englewood on Saturday, October 30. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1923 to Joseph Ollis and Elizabeth (Vargo) Ollis. She graduated from Brentwood High School in 1942. She served in U.S. Navy as Cryptologic Specialist (I) Petty Officer Third Class in Washington DC from 1944 to 1946, with training studies at Hunter College in Bronx, New York. She was honorably discharged at the Naval Security Station in Washington DC. Mary received three award ribbons for excellence. She provided volunteer services during that time to the wounded at Walter Reed Medical Center. She graduated from the Columbia Technical Institute in Washington DC with a certificate in Cartologic Drafting. She was employed by the US Geologic Survey and Occidental Minerals Corp. as a cartologic and geologic drafting technician. She married Leo H. Hendrickson on March 2, 1953 and after 39 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on June 2, 1992 in Denver, Colorado. She is survived by daughters, Ann Elizabeth Hendrickson, Alice Carol Hendrickson and son-in law Gregory Blaine Vest, and Ella Jean (Hendrickson) Nix, grandson Joseph Andrew Nix, and brother Jay Edwin Ollis and his wife Ascension. She is preceded in death by son Stephen Joseph Ollis Hendrickson, son-in-law Timothy Olin Nix, and brother William Joseph Ollis. She was a member of U.S. Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, WAVES of Colorado, and World War II Veterans of Allegheny County, Penna., and a generous supporter of the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation. Services will be held Thursday, November 4, 2010, Noon at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2100 Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, with reception following and military burial service at 3:15 pm at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Denver. Contributions may be sent to American Cancer Society.
