Mary Jean Hottman

February 26, 1926 — May 12, 2016

On Thursday May 12, 2016, Mary Jean Hottman died peacefully with her family at her side. Mary Jean celebrated her 90th Birthday on February 26th of this year. She was born in 1926 in Odebolt, Iowa, and was raised on a farm outside of town by her parents, Neil Currie and Alice Smith Currie, along with her older sister, Margaret Hargens, and older brother Stuart. Mary Jean lived on the farm completing all the family chores along with Duke the dog until she graduated from Odebolt High School. After high school, Mary Jean attended Electric Radio and Television School of Omaha, NE. She then held positions with the Air Service Command at Hill Field, Ogden Utah, and Dayton, Ohio. She later attended St. Josephs Mercy College of Nursing in Souix City, Iowa, where she became a Registered Nurse. At that time, she became a flight attendant for Mid Continent Airlines. She then moved to Denver, Colorado where she became a staff nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital. On February 6, 1952 she was married to Maynard Hottman at Montview Presbyterian Church of Denver, Colorado. Mary Jean and Maynard raised their four children in Denver, where Mary Jean became a full time mom and small business supporter to Maynard. While her kids were in their later teens, Mary Jean went back to school and received her B.S degree in Allied Health Program at Colorado Women's College in Denver, Colorado. Using this degree, Mary Jean was a school nurse at West Middle School and Mrachek Middle School, both in Aurora, Colorado. She then became the Health Safety Coordinator at T.H. Pickens, also in Aurora. In 1992 Mary Jean and Maynard retired where they spend lots of time with grandkids and traveling. Mary Jean's full of life personality provided endless friendships. She was loving and provided absolute support to her husband for 44 years. She was encouraging, positive, and caring to her four children. She had an amazing ability to provide parenting lessons to her kids without ever raising her voice. She provided endless love and support to her grandchildren, and she had a glowing smile when spending time with her great grandson. Mary Jean kept in touch with her friends and family throughout her life and took her Christmas card writing very serious. Although she wasn't born to the technology generation, she used her computer and emailed friends and family until just a few weeks before her passing. Mary Jean loved her gardens and flowers, her pets (Duke, Missy, Suzie, Dolly and Tom to name a few) and taking care of the birds. She was a devote Christian, even help start a service for her friends at her final home, Morningstar Assisted Living. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Hottman, and her parents, Neil and Alice Currie, and siblings Margaret Hargens and Stuart Currie. She is survived by her children, Jeannine Eckles (Dan), Robert Hottman (Sharla), Joan Giroue (Rob), and Bruce Hottman (Lori). She is also survived by her grandchildren Greg Hottman (Laurien), AK Hottman (Lauren), Wes Hottman (Heather), Jarrod Giroue, Kaycee Giroue, AJ Hottman, Michael Hottman, Tedi Eckles, Madeline Eckles, Bob Eckles, and great grandson, Elijah Hottman. Mary Jean made a positive impact on so many people and will be forever in our hearts.
