Mary Joan Nelson

Mary Joan Nelson, 89, of Mount Pleasant, IA and formerly of Lakewood, CO, died on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Addington Place of Mount Pleasant, Mount Pleasant, IA.

Joan was born on August 22, 1935, on the family farm near Salem, Iowa. She graduated from Ainsworth High School with the class of 1947. She later married Verling Nelson, and together they made their home in Lakewood, Colorado. Joan worked for the Colorado Carpenter’s Apprenticeship Program, and later as an office manager for the Colorado Pipefitters Union, where she dedicated herself to supporting the work of skilled tradespeople.

A woman of strong convictions and quiet strength, Joan was known for her determined spirit and deep compassion. Though small in stature, she carried a mighty presence and was a loving aunt to those close to her. Her love for animals was evident throughout her life.

Joan was deeply engaged in civic life as a staunch Democrat and participated actively in caucuses for many years. Her faith was also central to her life; she was a devoted member of the Mile High Church in Lakewood.

Joan is remembered by her sister-in-law, Loa Vest; and many nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay D. and Pearlie Vest; her husband, Verling “Spin” Nelson; Siblings Glenneva (Bob) Peebler, and Jay Vest.

A Memorial Service honoring Joan will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 11:00AM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
