Mary Virginia Smith

Mary Virginia Smith passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. She was born February 22, 1926 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Frances Dwyer and Edward Haley. She grew up in Oklahoma with three sisters and one brother, all predeceased. In 1943, Mary Virginia moved to Denver, Colorado and worked as a secretary at Fort Logan while attending Denver University. It was at Ft. Logan that she met her beloved husband of 62 years, James Elwood Smith. In addition to her husband, Mary Virginia is survived by her four children Peggy (Peter Nelson), Greg (Annie Roberts), Nancy, and Jeff (Antonette DeLauro); nine grandchildren (one predeceased, Spencer Nelson); and one great grandchild. Mary Virginia enjoyed golfing at Pinehurst; singing for 30 years in the choir at Church of the Risen Christ; also singing with other mothers (Harmomics) at nursing homes; and traveled through Germany and Prague with a singing group. A Visitation will be held Monday, April 9, 2012 from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M., followed by a Recitation of the Rosary, both at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 1091 South Colorado Boulevard, in Denver, Colorado. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Church of the Risen Christ, 3060 South Monaco Parkway, in Denver, Colorado. Graveside Service will be private at Fort Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of St John, 1320 Everett Court, Lakewood, Colorado 80215.
