Martha was born in Velarde, New Mexico, a small community located along the Rio Grande River between Taos and Espanola. Velarde is in an orchard filled valley with apple, peach, apricot, and pear trees. Martha's siblings are Lorraine Lucero (deceased) Paul Lucero Amadeo Gerson (deceased) Benjamin (Fabiola) Lucero (deceased) Lorraine Hernandez Gerson (Beatrice) Lucero Amadeo (Martha) Lucero, Jr. Francis (Ileana) Lucero Frances Gloria (Larry) Aubrecht (deceased) Martha attended grade school and part of junior high school in Velarde. During junior high school she met Rev. Alden Sears, a pastor at the Presbyterian School, his wife, Vivian, a teacher at the school, and their daughter, Mitzi. Martha went to Nebraska with the Sears to finish junior high and begin high school. Eventually she returned to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to attend Menaul School as a boarding student. She graduated from Menaul in 1950. Martha recently received the Harper C. Donaldson Outstanding Alumni Award from Menaul School in May, 2011. She was an active supporter of Menaul School and the President of the Denver Alumni Association. Marty frequently traveled to Albuquerque to attend Menaul homecomings and graduations. Martha credited Miss Brunell, a teacher at Menaul, for encouraging her to attend nursing school. Martha graduated from the Presbyterian School of Nursing in Denver, Colorado, and later earned a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from the University of Denver. Marty met her husband of 57 years, Glen, when she was a nursing student in Denver. They were introduced by Glen's brother, Phil, and Marty's nursing school friend, Velma. They were married in 1954 – twice – once on March 17, 1954, in Raton, New Mexico, and again on June 20, 1954, in Denver at the home of Glen's parents. In 1962, after 10 years of clinical nursing, Marty became a nursing instructor at Presbyterian School of Nursing in Denver, Colorado. She continued to teach there until the school was closed and she retired. Glen and Marty have 4 children, Kathy and her husband, Steve, David, Grant and his wife, Angela, and Gary and his wife, Karen, 9 grandchildren, Lorenzo, Adam, Jessica, Adriana, Melissa, Luke, Tamara, Rebecca and Sarah and 6 great grandchildren, Lorenzo, Jr., Tommy, Natalie, Jay Jay, Aiden and Serena. In addition to her husband, Glen, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and siblings, she is survived by numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Marty had many interests and hobbies. She loved to fish and often took her kids and grandkids fishing. She was an avid gardener and she could make anything grow and thrive. Glen built a small greenhouse in their backyard where Marty raised plants and orchids. Marty even had an orchid named after her. Every year she nurtured many plant cuttings that she sold at the church garage sale. Marty was a sports fan, and an avid Bronco Fan. She looked forward to football season every year and she and Glen have been season ticket holders since 1962. They sat on the 40 yard line in the East Stands at Mile High Stadium for years before the new stadium was built. They purchased their original seats when Mile High Stadium was torn down and the seats are now positioned in the back yard at their home in Westminster. In addition to regularly attending the Bronco games at home, Glen and Marty were part of a group of friends who enjoyed traveling to many out of town games, including the Super Bowl in New Orleans when Denver played Dallas. Reading was a passion and Marty read anything and everything. Besides enjoying fiction and biographies, she read history and was a bible scholar. Her knowledge of the bible and her teaching skills were used to teach Sunday School and bible study at Westminster United Methodist Church. Marty enjoyed learning and continued to learn throughout her life. She and Glen attended a class through the Foreign Policy Association on Great Decisions until recently. Marty continued to stay abreast of advances in medicine and medical treatments and she was particularly knowledgeable about alternative health treatments. She was a wealth of knowledge and it was common for family and friends to call her for remedies, suggestions and ideas. She was a strong believer of the benefits of healthy living including eating well. It struck her particularly hard when she learned that she had cancer because she worked so diligently at doing the right things to keep herself and her family healthy. Marty was an excellent cook and a skilled baker and she was always adjusting recipes to make them healthier. She canned fruits and vegetables, made dill and sweet pickles and delicious jams and jellies. Roasting and freezing green chile was an annual ritual. Martha loved traveling and she particularly enjoyed her trips back and forth to New Mexico. She and Glen spent a lot of time in Albuquerque for Menaul activities, and she loved spending time with her brother, Amadeo, his wife, Martha, their kids, Art, Lawrence, his wife, Michelle, Lisa, her fiancé, Bonifacio, her aunt, Lena Goodhart and visiting other family members throughout New Mexico. She also enjoyed traveling to Talcott Family Reunions throughout the U.S. Marty was a devout Christian who lived her faith and followed the teachings of Jesus Christ in her daily life. She was a kind and good-hearted person who genuinely cared for and loved people. She taught her children to accept people for who they are regardless of their race, religion or skin color. She was an example to all she knew and she positively influenced the lives of many relatives, family and friends. Marty will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A scholarship fund has been created in Marty's name at Menaul School. Donations may be made to the Mary Martha Lucero Talcott Memorial Scholarship Fund at Menaul School, 301 Menaul Blvd., NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107.
