Maryland Kay Mier

Maryland Kay Mier, 69, Denver, died on Saturday, July 7, 2012. Maryland was born on March 23, 1943, in Burt, Iowa. She lived many years in Denver, Colorado, Chincoteague, Virginia, Portland, Oregon and Jacksonville, Texas. Maryland's desire to succeed on her own led her to work as a waitress, secretary and bookkeeper, and manager. She worked for R.W. Mier Construction, Wilson's Cleaners, a Steel Railroad Company, and A.T. Smith and Company. Maryland loved her home, gardening, her animals and most important spending time with her friends and family. She is survived by two children, Leslie Lynn Smith (Steven Wallace Smith) and Alexander Harry Mier (Tanya Sue Mier), five grandchildren, Donald Clayton Smith, Zachary Beau Smith (Ana Leigh Smith), Serina Isabella Smith, Ray William Mier, Alexa Kay Mier, One great grandson, Trent Steven Smith, sisters Elenor and Betty and brothers, Don, Jerry and Harvey. Preceded in death by her husband Shirley Lester Van Gerpen and then Robert William Mier, her parents Iris and Merle Hiatt, brothers Loren and Dean and Sisters Beulah, Margie, and Ella Faye. Contributions may be made toward a fund for Maryland's grandchildren. Although she supported many organizations her true passion would have been to leave something for her grandchildren. Memorial Service will be Friday, July 13, 2012, 1:30 PM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado 80227. Additional Memorial Service will be conducted Friday, July 13, 2012, 3:00 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80235.
