Matthew Albert Vinnola

September 9, 1992 — March 9, 2024

Denver

Matthew “Sonny” Albert Vinnola, age 31, of Denver, Colorado, went to be with our Lord on March 9, 2024. Matthew was born on September 9, 1992 to Albert Vinnola and Janet van der Laak-Ruiz (deceased 8/12/2020).

Growing up, Matthew or “Sonny” as he was often called, was a fun-loving and beautiful child who grew up to love drawing, playing football, playing with his dog Pico and reading. He was an excellent student and had a wonderful imagination. When his parents divorced, Matthew and his sister Italia went to live with their father, where they both attended Columbine High School. Matthew graduated from Columbine High School in 2010. One of his favorite spots to visit during the summers growing up was his grandpa’s farm in Anton Chico, New Mexico. He and his brothers, sisters and cousins would go exploring, riding bikes, and having fun. Matthew had an exuberance for life. He loved to be with his family. Matthew was a kind and gentle soul. He loved children and being silly with his nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered for his beautiful smile and great big hugs.

Later in life, Matthew struggled with mental health brought on by addiction. His mother, Janet, made it her life’s mission to help support Matthew and alleviate the difficulties that came with being in and out of the system. Matthew’s challenges and life experience became an inspiration for potential legislation to help the unhoused and those struggling with mental health. Matthew’s life was certainly extended by his mother’s devotion and attention.

Matthew made the world his home and though he chose to spend much of his time on the streets, his family would always receive him with open arms when he decided to come home. Today, Matthew, our “Sonny” has made his way to a forever home, where he finds peace, comfort and unconditional love in the arms of our Lord. Matthew, you are gone too soon. You will forever and always be in our hearts and prayers. You are loved beyond measure. God Bless you.

Matthew is survived by his siblings Italia Vinnola (Stefano Marchig), Justin Romero (Kate Ju), Raven Ruiz and Nico DeVolder, his father Albert Vinnola, as well as much extended family on both his mother and father’s side.

Please share memories and condolences with Matthew's family by signing the guestbook.
