Arvada

Loving Mother, Dedicated Nurse

Maurita Agatha Jennings, 88, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2023, with her family by her side.  She was born in Chicago Illinois on October 26, 1935, to Albert and Margaret Jennings and raised there with her brothers, Albert (Bud) and Barry Jennings, all now deceased.

After attending DePaul University, she received her nursing certificate in 1956.  She married John Huyer (now deceased) in 1961, and later moved to Arvada Colorado with her husband and her two sons.  She began her long career in nursing at Lutheran Hospital in 1967 and soon made a name for herself appearing on the front page of the Denver Post in 1970 when transporting injured workers from the Keystone mining accident to Lutheran.  Over her long career as an ER nurse, she earned her RN and was looked upon as a leader in her field.  She worked with, taught, and mentored several nurses in the ER department before retiring at the age of 70 in 2005.  She helped nurture a family atmosphere in the ER with many close friendships that survived over the years.

After her retirement, Maurita was active in her church, Spirit of Christ Catholic Community in Arvada.  She was involved in regular bible study groups and had a great interest in her catholic faith.  She was an avid reader and belonged to several book clubs with her nursing family.

She is survived by her children, John Huyer Jr., Stephen Huyer (wife Suzanne), Chris Huyer as well as grandchildren Nicole Huyer, Daniel McGregor-Huyer, Alexander Huyer, and Mary Beth and Margaret McGregor. Her children always provided her with a great sense of pride and accomplishment and she loved them very much.

A memorial service for Maurita will be held in April at Sprit of Christ Catholic Community with the specific date to be announced later.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Collier Hospice Center in her memory.
