May L. Howell

July 10, 1921 — October 28, 2015

May Landes Howell was born July 10, 1921 in Portovelo, Ecuador. Her father Ivan Landes was a mining engineer and her mother, May Nicholls Landes, was a successful transplant into a completely foreign lifestyle from being a piano teacher in Southern California. Ivan was from Illinois and Missouri, but his career took him around the world before he died in Ecuador in 1975. Her mother was born in Eccles, England, but traveled to Europe and lived in Providence, Rhode Island and San Bernardino, California before she died in Denver, Colorado in 1979. On September 7, 1940, May married Galen E. ""Pete"" Howell in Westwood, California at St. Albans Chapel on the UCLA campus where both Pete and May were students. Following her graduation from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado in 1971, May taught Vocational Marketing in Denver Public Schools for seventeen years. She continued her education earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Education as well as serving as president of the Colorado Vocational Education Association at two different times. She was also honored to be named Colorado Vocational Teacher of the Year. May was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church including St. Paul's, Lakewood, Colorado and St. John's, Ouray, Colorado, and St. Thomas, Miami, Florida. Pete died in 1998 and her son David died in 1989. She is survived by daughter Barbara Bryant (Ted) of Lakewood, Colorado; her son Peter Howell (Francesca) of Boulder, Colorado; and her daughter Martha Howell (Paul Brace) of Canberra, Australia. Her grandchildren are Anne Cook, Ted Bryant, Scott Bryant, Dylan Howell, Morganne Howell, Amber Brace and Heather Duncan. She also has eight great-grandchildren Kaitlin, Kimberlyn and Karleigh Cook and Gavin, Isabella and Olivia Bryant, Liliana Duncan, and Thorin Brace-Carbo.Her brother Jackson Nicholls Landes resided in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he died in 2004. It is her wish that in lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to an Episcopal church of choice, an educational institution or to an environmental group which will contribute to keeping the forests and gardens of the world beautiful.
