Mel P. Kallas

Mel P. Kallas of Littleton passed away peacefully on December 12th at age 95. Mel is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ann; daughter Maria; son Lewis; and grandchildren Nicholas L. Smiley-Kallas, Michael Gabriel Kallas and Anna Melissa (Aleksandr) Trbovich of Durango, CO. He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Louis and Maria Kallas (Kallerogeropoulos) of St. Louis, MO. and brothers George and Milton. Mel was a gentle spirit and native of St. Louis. He moved to Littleton in 2003 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, was wounded in action twice, and received The Purple Heart and three Bronze Stars for campaigns in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland. Following WW2, he returned to St. Louis and in 1949, married Ann Petropoulos of Milwaukee, WI. He was an active board member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in St. Louis and served as President of the American Hellenic Veterans Association for two terms. Mel was a private banker with Security Bank / Mercantile Trust for many years before retiring as a St. Louis County Deputy Sheriff in 2003 after a 27 year career. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. “Every day is a bonus” was his favorite saying. A Trisagion will be held on Tuesday at 7 PM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood and Funeral Service on Wednesday at 10 AM at Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4610 E. Alameda Ave., Denver. Burial with Army Honors will be on Wednesday at 12:15 PM at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area ""C"". In lieu of flowers, donations to The Denver Hospice or a charity of choice are encouraged. Rest in Peace Mel, Dad and Papou. We love you and will miss you. Daisy too.
