Michael Mark McGloin

February 4, 1947 — April 27, 2016

Michael Mark McGloin was born in Butte, Montana on February 4, 1947 to James McGloin and Helen Lynch McGloin. He spent his childhood in Butte. After his mother's death when he was just 11 years old, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Mae McGloin Keller and Fred Keller. Mike graduated from Boys Central High School in 1965; he was the valedictorian of his class. He attended Gonzaga University for one year and then transferred to Carroll College in Helena, Montana where he graduated magna cum laude in 1969. He later attended Notre Dame Law School where he received his J.D., with honors, in 1972. Mike was quick to laugh and slow to anger. He had a big voice, a big sense of humor and an even bigger personality -- you knew when he was in the room. He never saw a baby he didn't flirt with, or a dog or cat that he didn't reach down to pet. He loved all children, especially his own. He took his Irish roots very seriously, right down to his favorite soap -- Irish Spring, of course. It is fitting that he died on April 27, 2016, the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising in Dublin. He succumbed to melanoma, the same disease that took his mother. He is survived by his brother, Father James McGloin, S.J., of Lusaka, Zambia; his wife, Wynn E. Strahle, and his children, Cashel McGloin and Brendan McGloin, all of Denver; his ""not-son"" Sam Telfair of Denver; his niece and nephew, Elizabeth and Mitchel Craun, and his best friend, Luna the Wonder Cat. He had many beloved cousins and relatives, including Thomas McGloin of Butte, Montana; Robert McCormick, Sr., Linda Seveland, Robert McCormick, Jr., Bill McCormick, and Rose Kellett, all of the Denver area; and Father Brendan Crowley of Clonmel, Ireland. Over the course of his life, Mike worked as a post-hole digger, a jackhammer operator, a laborer for the Anaconda Mining Company, an assistant District Attorney and a respected lawyer. He joined the Denver firm of Arkin & Hanlon in 1973. The firm later became McGloin, Davenport, Severson & Snow. He practiced law there until 2013 when the firm merged with Burleson, LLP. Throughout 2016, he practiced with Lindquist & Venom, LLP. American Lawyer and Corporate Counsel included him as a Top Rated Lawyer for Energy, Environmental, and Natural Resources. He mentored many attorneys over his career and impressed all with his intelligence, kindness and lack of pretension. His legal partners, Gary Davenport, Bob Severson and Ron Snow were also among his best friends and survive him. Mike was a gifted athlete. In his senior year of high school, he played quarterback and led his team to win the state championship. He attended college on basketball and football scholarships. In 1997, he was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame. He remained physically active his entire life. Once you were Mike's friend, you were his friend for life. He remained close to his best friends from childhood. James ""Curly"" Burns of Butte, Montana, William ""Mac"" MacIntyre of Billings, Montana and Ron Duran of Seattle, Washington all survive him. The family requests that those who knew Mike share a special memory or a funny Mike story at HoranCares.com. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date, to be announced. He asked that donations in his memory be made to any chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Information about the Denver branch can be found at https://www.biglittlecolorado.org. Beloved Mike, you leave behind an empty space that can never be filled. We are blessed to have been part of your life.
